FROM THE FOUNDER

Why we built Countersigned (yes, it’s partly to promote DocuPipe)

Let’s get this out of the way: Countersigned exists partly to make DocuPipe better known. We say so on the homepage, on the About page, and now here. I also think it’s a genuinely useful thing for us to build. Both are true, and I don’t think either one needs hiding.

01

A document company, standing next to the front door

I cofounded DocuPipe. DocuPipe reads documents for businesses: lab reports, bank statements, insurance claims, invoices, contracts. It turns them into structured data that software can act on. It’s a boring business, and a real one. It’s also a hard thing to get famous for. Nobody brags about a bank statement that got parsed correctly.

A lot of the documents we process started life the same way. Somebody sent a PDF, and somebody else signed it. A lease. A services agreement. A patient intake form. Signing is the front door for a huge share of the world’s paperwork, and we’d been standing right next to it without putting our name on the door.

02

The signing part is easy. That’s not the product.

Here’s something the e-signature industry doesn’t love saying out loud: putting a squiggle on a PDF is a weekend project. You could vibe code it in an afternoon. So could I.

What you’re actually paying for with an e-signature service is three boring things:

  1. Security. The contract, with your salary or your client’s pricing or your tenant’s ID number on it, sits somewhere private, and only the right people can open it.
  2. Trust. When someone says “I never signed that,” there’s a record that says otherwise, and you can believe the record.
  3. Stability. The service is still around, and still has your agreement, three years from now when you actually need to dig it up.
03

We already do the boring parts for a living

None of those three show up in a demo. You only notice them when they fail. They also happen to be the job we’ve been doing at DocuPipe all along.

DocuPipe’s customers are healthcare companies, lenders and insurers. They send us bloodwork, medical referrals, and bank statements with every transaction someone made last quarter. Nobody hands you that stuff on vibes. They want to know where it’s stored, who can see it, whether it’s encrypted, whether you train AI on it, and what happens if you go down on a Tuesday. We’ve been answering those questions for years.

So when we looked at e-signing, the hard part wasn’t new to us. Same team, same habits. Countersigned keeps documents in private storage, encrypted at rest with AES-256 and served over HTTPS. Your documents are never used to train AI models. Every agreement gets a completion record with document hashes, and we check those hashes every time you download, so a quietly altered PDF doesn’t slip past. The things we learned the hard way at DocuPipe, Countersigned got on day one.

04

Why it’s mostly free

Countersigned Free gives you 20 envelopes a month and up to 20 saved templates. No credit card, no trial clock, no “your document is ready, upgrade to download it.” It stays free. If your team sends more than that, Pro is $20 a seat per month for a shared pool of 200 envelopes.

Why can we do this? Because sending an agreement costs us very little: some storage, a few emails, a bit of compute. Not zero, but close. Meanwhile, the cheapest DocuSign plan that lets you send anything at all gets you five envelopes a month. That price was never about what it costs to send five envelopes.

We’ve run this playbook before. DocuPipe’s free tools produce over ten thousand downloads a day, mostly for people who never sign up or pay us a cent. Some of them come back when they have ten thousand documents instead of one. The rest got something useful for free, and that’s a fine outcome too.

You could say it’s a bit cynical to build a product that’s partly an ad. Maybe. But the alternative is buying more Google ads, and a Google ad never got anyone’s lease signed. I’d rather spend the marketing budget on something you actually use.

05

Why that makes it more stable, not less

It’s reasonable to be wary of free tools. Free products die. They get acquired, they get a paywall bolted on, they quietly stop answering email.

I think our setup is the more stable one. Countersigned is run by Hoss, Inc., the same company that runs DocuPipe. It doesn’t need to squeeze you to justify existing, because its job is to be useful and to make DocuPipe a name you’ve heard. As long as DocuPipe is a business, and it is, keeping Countersigned running and honest is cheap for us and good for our reputation.

And because we’re in the business of keeping promises about documents, there’s no version of this where we hold your signed agreements hostage. You can download the completed PDF and its completion record whenever you want. Keep a copy. You should do that with any signing service, including ours.

06

What it isn’t

Some honesty, since that’s the point of this post.

  1. Countersigned doesn’t send your documents to DocuPipe. They’re separate products. Clicking through to DocuPipe doesn’t link accounts, move agreements, or start any AI processing.
  2. Sharing a team doesn’t mean sharing certificates. DocuPipe’s compliance work covers DocuPipe. Countersigned’s Trust Center lists exactly what Countersigned does today, and what it doesn’t.
  3. We don’t offer notarization, qualified electronic signatures, or certificate-backed PDF sealing. If your agreement legally needs those, use a service that has them.
  4. If you’ve used DocuSign, the screens will feel familiar. That’s on purpose. Switching tools shouldn’t mean relearning how to send a PDF.
07

Try it, and tell us what’s broken

If you need something signed today, Countersigned is free, and it’ll still be free next year. If you have a pile of documents and wish someone would just read them for you, that’s DocuPipe. That’s the whole pitch, and we’re not hiding either half of it.

If something’s broken, missing, or annoying, write to countersigned@docupipe.ai. That address lands in my inbox.
